Torch Ginger Flower Mouse Pads
This mousepad features a Torch Ginger flower, scientifically named Etlingera elatior. This striking tropical flower grows on tall, thick stalks directly from underground rhizomes. The bold, waxy red outer layers are actually modified leaves called bracts, which tightly encase the center. As it fully matures, it forms a dramatic cone shape that strongly resembles a burning torch. It is native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia (particularly Malaysia and Indonesia) but flourishes globally in warm, highly humid tropical climates. We took this photo in Mountain View, HI.
In Southeast Asian cuisine, the unopened flower buds are highly aromatic and used fresh or sliced to add a distinct sweet-and-sour flavor to signature dishes like Malaysian Asam Laksa.
